Michael P. (Mike) Rucker
Mike likes to be considered a native of Virginia although he relocated to Peoria in 1963 when he was recruited by Caterpillar upon his graduation from Virginia Tech. He traveled extensively and lived abroad in various locations in assignments with Caterpillar and retired after a forty year career with the company.
Mike’s primary writing effort focuses on children’s stories, including seventeen books (thus far) about Terry a young tractor who has many remarkable adventures. With his stories Mike tries to teach children “lessons of life” while avoiding being condescending or preachy.
Mike enjoys memorizing and reciting poetry. His only published poems are what he calls “little jingles” in which he tries to distill the essence of each Terry book lesson. Each Terry book includes one of these little poems set to keyboard music. Mike is a volunteer with the “Look It’s My Book” reading program which provides books to grade school children to encourage their interest in reading.
