Civil War Ancestors was the topic of our April program, presented by club member Helen Burgess. Burgess’ research started with an old obituary she found for her great-grandfather, Charles Carroll. The obituary revealed that his father, John R. Carroll, died as a prisoner of war, at Andersonville Prison, in Georgia. Andersonville, the subject of many horror stories, is now a national park and cemetery. Further research by Burgess revealed a clash within her own family, between Union and Confederate Soldiers. Her information not only stimulated conversation within our group, but it brought to light the emotions, devastation and losses suffered by Civil War Soldiers and their families.
